Tech: China's first space station was decimated in a fireball over the South Pacific — here's how it went from launch to crashing back to Earth

The main body and the solar panels of the Tiangong-1 Chinese space station are clearly visible in this radar image taken while the spacecraft was still orbiting Earth.

At 8:16 p.m. ET on April 1, Tiangong-1's orbit around the planet decayed enough that it was caught up in the thicker air that surrounds our planet.

  • At approximately 8:16 p.m. ET on April 1, Chinese space station Tiangong-1's orbit around the planet finally decayed enough that it was caught up in the thicker air that surrounds our planet.
  • Tiangong-1 was launched launched in September 2011. It was a major step for the Chinese space program — a place to practice docking to prepare for the eventual Chinese large modular space station.
  • After the Chinese space agency lost control of Tiangong-1, it was just a matter of time before it crashed back into Earth.

In the end, Chinese space station Tiangong-1's crash back into Earth's atmosphere was exactly what anyone could have hoped for.

The station's fiery re-entry was close to where scientists would have tried to direct it if they'd had any control over the spacecraft's return.

But for a long time, the exact return point was being closely followed. Most space debris burns up in atmosphere — fortunately for us since there's so much debris there. But this spacecraft was large and multi-layered enough that it was possible at least some segments or parts would survive re-entry.

Still, the chance that any bit of space station would hit a person was always infinitesimal, about "1 million times smaller than the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot," the Aerospace Corporation, a nonprofit spaceflight-research company, wrote before the re-entry.

"It's not impossible, but since the beginning of the space age … a woman who was brushed on the shoulder in Oklahoma is the only one we're aware of who's been touched by a piece of space debris," Bill Ailor, an aerospace engineer with the Aerospace Corp. who specializes in atmospheric reentry, previously told Business Insider.

Chances were always highest that if anything did survive the fall, it would land in the ocean. Oceans cover 71% of Earth's surface, after all, so statistically, that'd be where you'd place the safest bet for anything to end up.

And that's what happened.

At approximately 8:16 p.m. ET on April 1, Tiangong-1's orbit around the planet finally decayed enough that it was caught up in the thicker air that surrounds our planet.

The "vast majority" of the 34-foot, 9.4 ton schoolbus-sized spacecraft burned up in the atmosphere, China's space agency announced in a statement, according to Reuters.

But some material from the craft most likely survived, astrophysicist Brad Tucker of the Australian National University told the newswire. That material seems to have ended up in the largest ocean on the planet, the Pacific, not all that far from the "spacecraft graveyard" where scientists try to de-orbit large spacecraft so they crash back to Earth safely, astronomer Jonathan McDowell said on Twitter.

"Most likely the debris is in the ocean, and even if people stumbled over it, it would just look like rubbish in the ocean and be spread over a huge area of thousands of square kilometers," said Tucker.

From launch to crash

China first launched Tiangong-1 into orbit on September 30, 2011. The launch of Tiangong-1, which translates into "Heavenly Palace" in English, was lauded as an important achievement by space experts.

The station was a stepping stone for the Chinese space program. It was used to practice docking maneuvers in space — something essential for further space exploration, including the use of larger space stations in the future. Tiangong-1 also served as a prototype for a larger and more permanent 20-ton station (the Chinese large modular space station) that China is planning to have operational in 2022.

Tiangong-1 was visited by two crews of taikonauts, or Chinese astronauts. The first was a three-person crew in June 2012 that included the first Chinese woman in space; the second was another three-person crew in June 2013.

All in all, the station "conducted six successive rendezvous and dockings with spacecraft Shenzhou-8, Shenzhou-9, and Shenzhou-10 and completed all assigned missions, making important contributions to China's manned space exploration activities," according to a memo that China submitted in May 2017 to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.

No visitors arrived at Tiangong-1 after that second crew, but the station was still used to gather data and observe Earth's surface, monitoring ocean and forest use, according to Space.com.

In September 2016, China launched Tiangong-2, a second space station, which was first visited by a crew the next month. Earlier that year, China had lost contact with Tiangong-1.

Since the loss of contact, the space station's orbit slowly decayed. Objects in low-Earth orbit need the occasional boost to maintain their orbit. Otherwise, those orbits eventually decay until the objects hit Earth's atmosphere.

When Tiangong-1 did hit the atmosphere, it was likely traveling around 17,000 miles per hour.

It would have been a sudden stop, however — moving that quickly into thicker air is a recipe for a fireball. Most likely, the drag would have quickly ripped off solar panels and antenna. Superheated plasma would have melted and disintegrated much of what was left.

And finally, a rain of whatever remained sprinkled over the South Pacific, northwest of Tahiti and fairly close to Samoa.

It wasn't the largest object to ever fall back to Earth and with more than 14,000 uncontrolled pieces of space junk larger than a softball flying around the planet, it won't be the last.

Tech: 11 potentially cancer-causing things you might use every day

null

Cancer is lurking in a lot of the things we consume every day. Here are 11 potentially carcinogenic things to watch out for.

Cancer-linked substances are everywhere.

Sometimes it can feel downright unavoidable: Californians now have to read cancer warnings as they sip their morning coffees, and the World Health Organization International Agency for Research on Cancer keeps a running tally of things that definitely cause cancer, seem to cause cancer, and might cause cancer.

All cancer is a result of damage or genetic mutations in our DNA. It fundamentally affects the way cells grow and divide, changing them in perverse ways. Those toxic, rapidly multiplying cells then grow into unruly tumors, and can spread far and wide through the body.

Some cases of cancer are out of our control, determined by genetic defects and predispositions passed down from one generation to the next, or spurred by genetic changes we undergo through our lifetime.

Products like cigarettes are clear cancer-causers, while other consumables like coffee and grilled meat may up your chances of getting cancer by just a tiny fraction, if at all.

The truth is, just about every compound out there could possibly, maybe, one day contribute to cancer. Still, there are some products that scientists are starting to sense we should monitor more closely.

Here's what we know.

Birth control

Going on birth control is a mixed bag when it comes to cancer.

While it may increase a woman's risk for developing breast and cervical cancers, studies suggest it might also lower the chances of developing endometrial, ovarian, or colorectal cancers.

Sugar

Scientists now know that eating too much sweet stuff can not only lead to diabetes, it can also actively damage your cells and up your odds of developing cancer.

But that's not all.

New research suggests that sugar may fuel tumor growth in the body, because cancer loves to use sugar as fuel.

"The hyperactive sugar consumption of cancerous cells leads to a vicious cycle of continued stimulation of cancer development and growth" Belgian molecular biologist Johan Thevelein said when his latest study was released in 2017. Scientists say the groundbreaking research gives us a better understanding of how sugar and cancer interact, and could one day help create targeted diet strategies for patients.

Some plastics

Plastics can be dangerous, especially when they leach chemicals out through scratches or cracks in a container.

BPA is a synthetic estrogen that's been used in many plastics and resins since the 1960s. And it's a known endocrine disruptor, which means it messes with the natural balance of hormones in our bodies. BPA resins can be used inside products like metal food cans as sealants, while polycarbonate BPA plastics can include water bottles and food storage containers. BPA even shows up on the shiny side of receipt paper, to stabilize the ink.

While many plastic manufacturers have started labeling their products as "BPA-free," there's still a lot of the breast and prostate cancer-causing stuff around.

Processed foods

Any food that comes in a crinkly plastic wrapper, is industrially sealed, and built to last for months without spoiling may be a quick fix for a hunger pang on-the-go, but it's also likely upping your risk for cancer.

Scientists in France recently zeroed in on a link between people who eat more processed foods, and those who develop more cancer.

They're not sure yet whether it's the shelf-stabilizing ingredients in the food that's the problem, the plastic packaging, or some combination of the two. And because their study was correlative, it's possible there's some other hidden factor at work.

Cigarettes

Even though the tobacco industry tried to cover this one up, we've known for years that tobacco smoke has at least 70 cancer-causing chemicals inside. And it's not just smokers who are affected: people who inhale secondhand smoke can develop deadly forms of cancer too.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says "nonsmokers who are exposed to secondhand smoke at home or at work increase their risk of developing lung cancer by 20–30%."

People who chew their tobacco are at increased risk, too.

Grilled meat

Smoky meats from the grill may be tender and tasty, but they probably also increase your risk of cancer. That's because the muscle meats contain compounds called Heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

According to the National Cancer Institute, when meats like beef, poultry, or fish are cooked over a hot open flame or pan fried at high temperatures, the fat and juices they release into the fire spark flames with the dangerous chemicals inside that then cook into the meat we eat.

They're not positive these cause cancer, but in lab tests, they change DNA in ways that might increase cancer risk.

Alcohol

Regular, heavy alcohol consumption can up your risk of developing several different kinds of cancer, including throat, liver, breast and colon cancer.

According to the National Cancer Institute, "the risk of developing cancer increases with the amount of alcohol a person drinks."

Salt-cured meat or fish and pickled foods

Salt-cured fish, which is popular in China, is high in nitrates and nitrites — known carcinogens in animals that may also cause cancer in humans. The chemical compounds can damage DNA, spurring head and neck cancer.

According to Cancer Research UK, "People from China, or with Chinese ancestry living in the UK, have higher rates of nasopharyngeal cancer than other ethnic groups. This might be due to their diet."

Eating lots of pickled foods can also up your risk for stomach cancer.

Processed meats like ham, bacon, and sausages

Sorry.

The World Health Organization says processed meats like hot dogs, ham, bacon, and sausage can cause cancer.

That's because the meat has been treated in some way to preserve or flavor it,using techniques like salting, curing, fermenting, or smoking.

The WHO also thinks that any kind of red meat at all may be linked to increased risk of cancers like colorectal cancer, but they can't say that for certain yet.

Acrylamide, which is produced in small amounts when some foods are cooked and browned.

Similar to the way that cooking meat over an open flame can increase cancer risk, the browning of certain foods when cooked at high temperatures produces a chemical compound called acrylamide.

This happens naturally when foods like bread, coffee beans, toasted marshmallows or cookies are baked, in a process called the Maillard reaction.

But the dose of acrylamide in a toasty cup of coffee or a chewy cookie are probably not going to kill you; it's dangerous when inhaled in large doses (and it is one of the toxic chemicals smokers suck in), but we don't have solid evidence yet that a little browning is harmful.

California just mandated that coffee sellers warn their customers about the possible cancer risks of drinking in roasty acrylamide-laden coffee, even though the bulk of available scientific evidence suggests that drinking coffee is actually pretty good for your health.

Tanning beds

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, people who use a tanning bed before age 35 up their risk of developing melanoma by 75%.

Regular sun can hurt you too, so wearing protective clothing, sunscreen, and finding shade are all good ideas if you're going to be out in the sunshine for more than 15 minutes.

He said while cooking on the show:

“I remember when my son came to visit with his girlfriend and the girl called her mother that she should cook for my son, I was surprised. As a woman you need to know how to cook, she just had to go. I told him it was a wrong note. He has to hit the key well. If you are a woman and you can’t cook, you are out”.

Mike Bamiloye: Church instrumentalists react after Mount Zion Pastor slams them

Church instrumentalists react after Pastor Bamiloye's comments

The founder of Mount Zion Faith Ministry made some observations over the attitude of Church instrumentalists via his Facebook page.

Church instrumentalists have reacted after Mount Zion’s Pastor Mike Bamiloye commented on their attitude.

On March 29, 2018, the drama minister and founder of Mount Zion Faith Ministry expressed his displeasure with these performers via his Facebook page.

In a post titled: “I have a serious concern,” he made some observations concerning instrumentalists, particularly the fact that they rarely answer altar calls.

He wrote, “The Church Instrumentalists. Those Young Men and Boys that play Musical instruments in the Church. I don’t Understand Many of Them.

I come Across them everywhere I have gone. As if their Attitudes have been Universally Agreed upon. You will be Preaching, They will be Fiddling with Guitar Strings.

You will be Teaching, many of them will be Sleeping or browsing. Messages of great importance will be blaring out to the Congregation,

They will be using their Keyboard to Confirm what the Preachers are saying. When Everyone is in sober reflections on the vital message, they will be playing Nollywood mood music.

AND THE ALTAR CALL IS MADE AND PEOPLE ARE COMING OUT FOR SALVATION OR REDEDICATION OF LIFE, THEY WILL BEGIN TO PLAY: I Surrender All…” TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO THE ALTAR.

BUT THEY MOST OF THE TIME DONT SEE THE REASON FOR THEM TO REDEDICATE THEIR LIVES TO JESUS. AND THEY RARELY COME OUT FOR ALTAR CALLS. I am Sorry, Maybe it is Only me that has observed this.”

Church instrumentalists react to Pastor Bamiloye’s comments

The performers took to the comment section to respond to the cleric’s observations.

One named Alldebest Ajite wrote, “I am keyboardist this happen to me. But as from today, I will change and God will take control of my life so that I can play my organ with Angel on resurrection day. Please pray for me.”

Another named Emma Mike Ayodele said, “I am an instrumentalist. before when I was not saved I play a lot of alujo, worldly beats to make people dance rubbish because the beat will determine the dance. but when I encounter Jesus and saved, my boss (King David) taught me how to play in spirit with my heart. I play exactly holy spirit wants. I can a play a beat throughout and holy spirit will move. thank God for his grace.”

Samuel Byiringiro wrote, “It’ s not about music. Me I’m a keyboard player in my church but that’ s not how I am. It’ s true there are some who play without even being born again but note that there are some others filled with the Holy Ghost. Music ministry is not a problem, the problem is musicians who are not Christ- conscious. Thank you, Sir.”

On Instagram, a user wrote, “Pastor pls we don’t like mixing “job” II mean working hour and worship… if I fall under anointing my pastor go sack me. Everybody has a call… just that mine was mistakenly not written in the bible.”

Pastor Bamiloye is yet to respond to their comments.

Kiss Daniel: Singer gives back to the poor on Easter day

Kiss Daniel says 'Yeba' does not promote sexual molestation

During the Easter celebration, we got to see the other side of Kiss Daniel as he shared food and money with some beggars at Mushin.

Kiss Daniel might be a back to back hitmaker but he also has a benevolent heart as he took out time to give back to the poor on Easter day.

The gist is that a fan actually asked Kiss Daniel how many retweets he needed to be able to share food with the beggars at Iddi Araba in Mushin.

So sure the fan wasn't expecting Kiss Daniel's reply as he told him he didn't need any retweets to get that done. "No retweets…Let's feed em' tomorrow sharp," he replied the fan.

And yes, Kiss Daniel stood by his words as he went out with a couple of friends to Iddi Araba where he shared food with the visibly overwhelmed beggars in the area. He didn't only feed them, he shared 1000 naira each to the beggars.

Now we can add Kiss Daniels to the list of celebrities who are very benevolent. For the likes of Tonto Dikeh who is mostly known for giving out to the poor, even when sometimes controversies try to overshadow her good works.

Recall back in December 2017, the actress in conjunction with her NGO, Tonto Dikeh Foundation, paid a visit to the Persons living with disability in the Karanmajiji Disable Colony in Abuja to celebrate the United Nations International World Disability Day.

In the course of the visit, she shared gifts with the inhabitants of the colony and also spent time having fun with them. Tonto Dikeh who was excited about her visit took to her Instagram page on Sunday, December 3, 2017, where she shared photos of herself and her team during their visit to the colony.

JAMB: 3 states lead university admission in Engineering courses for 5 years

3 states lead university admission in Engineering for 5 years

Since 2011, JAMB data show that three south-west states have been leading other states in university admission for engineering courses.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has identified three states that usually lead others in university admission in Engineering courses.

The three states according to JAMB data are  Oyo, Ogun and Osun.

Out of the 36 states in Nigeria, the three south-west states are reported to have maintained a consistent lead in JAMB-administered admissions for Engineering courses in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Analysis of the data over a period of five years

Starting from 2011, the JAMB data show that while Osun had 1,196 students admitted into various universities to study Engineering degree courses, Ogun followed with 1,117 students with Oyo coming third with 1,076.

In 2012, Oyo came first with 1, 339 students, followed by Osun with 1,339 and Ogun came third with 1,081. Akwa Ibom and Ondo came fourth and fifth with 966 and 901 students admitted into Engineering respectively

In 2013, Oyo led again with 1,870 students, while Osun followed with 1,478 and Ogun came third with 1,244. Delta and Kaduna came fourth and fifth with 1,165 and 1,068 candidates respectively.

Osun returned to the first position in 2014 with 2,168 students while Oyo dropping to second had 1,647  students as Ogun came third with 1, 639. This time, Delta ca,e fourth with 1,447 students while and Ondo came fifth with  1,281 students.

In 2015, Oyo reclaimed the first position with 2,536 students, followed by Osun with 2,326, Delta came to third with 1, 511, while Ogun was relegated to the fourth position with 1, 468. Ondo maintained the fifth position with 1,368 students.

No alternative to Buhari in 2019, Forum tells Northern Elders

World: China's space station has finally fallen back to earth

An illustration of China's first space station, Tiangong-1, orbiting Earth.

A Chinese space station the size of a school bus re-entered Earth’s atmosphere at about 5:16 p.m. Pacific time Sunday, scattering its remaining pieces over the southern Pacific Ocean…

The demise of the station, Tiangong-1, became apparent when radar stations no longer detected it passing overhead.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries; the likelihood of pieces’ landing on someone was small, but not zero.

The station may have landed northwest of Tahiti, Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, said on Twitter. That location is north of the Spacecraft Cemetery, an isolated region in the Pacific Ocean where space debris has frequently landed.

For the past few weeks the fate of Tiangong-1 has provided some drama. The Chinese lost control of the spacecraft a couple of years ago and thus could not guide it to the middle of an ocean. Because of the drag of air molecules bouncing off Tiangong-1, the station’s altitude dropped, and the descent accelerated quickly in the last few days.

Multiple agencies issued predictions of the time of Tiangong-1’s end, most concluding that April 1 was the most likely date. But because it was moving so fast, it was impossible to know where exactly it would come down, and the debris would be scattered over thousands of square miles.

China launched Tiangong-1 — Tiangong translates as “heavenly palace” — in 2011 as essentially a proof-of-concept of technologies for future stations. Two crews of Chinese astronauts visited it, the first for 11 days, the second for 13 days.

In March 2016, the Chinese announced that communications had ended with the space station, but did not provide details. The altitude of the station was last increased three months earlier, in December 2015.

A second station, Tiangong-2, remains operating in orbit, and over the next few years, China plans to build a larger one.

For objects as large as Tiangong-1, 0 percent to 40 percent of the mass will make it all the way to Earth’s surface without burning up. But the station is far from being the largest object launched by humans to re-enter the atmosphere.

The Russian Mir space station, with a mass equal to 15 Tiangong-1s, was the largest, but the Russians successfully guided it to a harmless end over the Pacific Ocean in 2001.

NASA’s Skylab space station, equal to nine Tiangong-1s, made an uncontrolled tumble back to Earth in 1979. Most of the debris landed in the ocean, but a few pieces did land in Western Australia. No one was hurt.

15 killed, 55 persons injured in Boko Haram attack in Maiduguri

Maiduguri – No fewer than 15 persons are feared dead and 55 others sustained injuries in a Sunday night attack by Boko Haram insurgents at Bale community in the outskirts of Maiduguri.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that echoes from sporadic gunshots and multiple explosions which lasted for hours on Sunday evening, were heard from the outskirts of the city.

Competent security sources told NAN that a number of insurgents attacked Bale-Shuwa and Bale-Kura communities near Maiduguri in an attempt to infiltrate the town at about 8: 00 p. m.

The source disclosed that the insurgents parked their vehicles few meters away from a security check point and sneaked into the community.

The source added that the security operatives engaged in fierce gun battle with the insurgents who detonated Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and shot sporadically.

“Dozens of people including women and children were wounded from the explosion and gun shots.

“Due to darkness dead bodies were not evacuated immediately because there were suicide bombers among the attackers,” the added.

However, the Commander of the Theatre Command of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj-Gen. Rogers Nicholas, denied any death on the side of his soldiers or civilians in the attack.

Reacting to NAN inquiry in a text message he said, however, that some of the Boko Haram insurgents were killed.

“That’s not correct. There was an attack which was repelled and some Boko Haram insurgents were killed by gallant soldiers.

“However, Boko Haram came with suicide bombers who denoted their vests while running from the troops fire in a nearby community and that led to 14 civilians being injured from the blasts.” (NAN)

Tech: The Chinese space station hurtling towards Earth has crashed over the South Pacific

An illustration of China's first space station, Tiangong-1, orbiting Earth.

China's spacecraft Tiangong-1, a name that means "Heavenly Palace," has reportedly crashed back into Earth's atmosphere over the South Pacific ocean.

  • The Chinese space station Tiangong-1 came crashing back into Earth's atmosphere at approximately 8:16 p.m. ET, over the southern Pacific ocean.
  • Tiangong-1, which translates as "Heavenly Palace" in English, was China's first station launched into space.
  • Tiangong-1 was used to practice docking maneuvers and was visited by two crews of taikonauts, or Chinese astronauts.
  • China lost control of the station in March 2016, then launched the Tiangong-2 space station into orbit later that year.

The first space station China launched into orbit is no more.

The space station Tiangong-1, which translates to "Heavenly Palace" in English, came crashing back into Earth's atmosphere at approximately 8:16 p.m ET over the southern Pacific ocean, according to numerous sources, including the Joint Force Space Component Command, a statement from China reported by the AFP, and the Aerospace Corp.

According to reports, the space station reportedly burned up in the atmosphere over the Pacific northwest of Tahiti, not far from the "spacecraft graveyard" where space agencies often try to land debris from spacecraft.

It's likely that debris is scattered over a long stretch of the Pacific in that region.

Tiangong-1's end has been coming for years now.

The station was first launched at the end of September in 2011 and had been visited twice by crews of taikonauts, or Chinese astronauts, in 2012 and 2013.

But in March of 2016, China lost contact with Tiangong-1. The space station's orbit has been slowly decaying since then. By May 2017, Tiangong-1 was coasting about 218 miles above Earth and dropping by about 525 feet a day.

It was then just a countdown to figure out when and where it would break up in Earth's atmosphere.

The end of a space station

Tiangong-1 was a schoolbus-sized 9.4 ton spacecraft — about 34 feet long with a volume of 15 cubic meters, or about 1/60th of the volume of the International Space Station, which is the length of a football field.

When space stations come down, "a funny thing" happens that helps doom the spacecraft, Jesse Gossner, an orbital-mechanics engineer who teaches at the US Air Force's Advanced Space Operations School, previously told Business Insider.

"You start going really, really fast," he said. "Then you get slowed down really, really fast."

That's because the spacecraft is losing its forward speed, allowing gravity to accelerate the space station toward Earth. The air is still too thin to slow it down much, so it plummets faster and faster.

As the spacecraft falls into thicker air, the drag slows it down and begins to rip off solar panels, antennas, and other loosely attached pieces. Superheated plasma heats the vessel to thousands of degrees, melting and disintegrating it.

Only a few types of materials, like titanium, can withstand such punishment.

There is a chance that some gear and hardware left aboard could survive intact all the way to the ground, according to Bill Ailor, an aerospace engineer who specializes in atmospheric reentry. That durability is thanks to Tiangong-1's onion-like layers of protective material.

"The thing about a space station is that it's typically got things on the inside," Ailor, who works for the Aerospace Corporation, previously told Business Insider. "So basically, the heating will just strip these various layers off.

"If you've got enough layers, a lot of the energy is gone before a particular object falls out, it doesn't get hot, and it lands on the ground."

According to the statement from China quoted by AFP, the station was "mostly destroyed" upon re-entry.

What happens to the debris

The chances that debris from the station would hit a person or even end up on land were infinitesimal from the start.

According to The Aerospace Corp.'s website, the probability of being hit was "about 1 million times smaller than the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot."

But if a hunk of titanium, a computer, or another piece smashed through a roof or windshield, international space law would cover compensation for victims.

"It's China's responsibility if someone gets hurt or property gets damaged by this," a NASA representative previously told Business Insider.

If intact material from the station is recovered, it's still Chinese property.

Any debris that made it to Earth would be all that remains of the station China first launched as a step towards creating a permanent presence in space. In 2016, Tiangong-1 was superseded by Tiangong-2. And China is now considering plans to build a much larger space station in 2023.

While space debris usually burns up in Earth's atmosphere and is generally unlikely to hit a person, the Tiangong-1 crash serves as a reminder that there's a real space junk problem. Before its fiery demise, Tiangong-1 was just one of 14,000 uncontrolled objects larger than a softball in orbit around our planet — something experts say is a real problem with potentially scary consequences.

Now there's one fewer object to worry about.

  • She won Most Outstanding Player for the tournament.

It's been a good weekend for Arike Ogunbowale.

On Friday, the Notre Dame guard hit a game-winner over UConn to send her school to the NCAA Tournament championship vs. Mississippi State.

On Sunday, Ogunbowale once again delivered, catching the ball with three second left, the score tied 58-58 and making her way to the elbow to launch a contested three.

Swish. Notre Dame won it.

Ogunbowale shot just 6-21 from the field in the championship game, but when it mattered most, she once again delivered.

"It just felt right," Ogunbowale said of the shot after the game. "I practice late-game all the time. I just ran to Jackie [Young] and said, `Throw it to me, throw it to me.'"

The title was Notre Dame's first since 2001. Ogunbowale won Most Outstanding Player for the tournament.

Tech: A Chinese space station is about to crash to Earth — here's what it was doing

tiangong 1 chinese space station cmsa

A Chinese space station called Tiangong-1 is about to crash. It was used to practice space docking and served as a prototype for a future Chinese space station.

  • The Chinese modular space station Tiangong-1, launched in September 2011, is about to fall to Earth.
  • It was used to practice space docking and served as a prototype for a future permanent Chinese space station.
  • While operational, Tiangong-1 was visited by two crews of taikonauts.

Sometime on April 1, give or take a day, the Chinese space station Tiangong-1 will fall into Earth's atmosphere.

Most of the spacecraft will burn up in a fiery blaze as it gets dragged by gravity from the thinner air into the atmosphere itself.

The thicker air of the atmosphere will tear solar panels and antennas loose, melting and disintegrating much of the structure. Some material will stay intact, however — especially densely layered parts like engines. It's possible that compartments and parts of the station could survive re-entry and hit the ground — or more likely, the ocean — on Earth.

China hasn't controlled the Tiangong-1 modular space station for over two years now. Chinese officials confirmed in 2016 that they'd lost control of the spacecraft and that its orbit was deteriorating,

But before that, Tiangong-1 was the first station China launched into space.

Tiangong-1 — the name means "Heavenly Palace" — is a 34-foot, two-room, 9.4-ton vessel that was launched into orbit at the end of September 2011.

Space experts considered its initial launch an important achievement.

One of the main goals was to have a station that could be used to practice docking in space, which is essential for further space exploration, including the use of larger space stations in the future. Tiangong-1 also served as a prototype for a permanent 20-ton space station that China is planning to launch in 2023.

"It conducted six successive rendezvous and dockings with spacecraft Shenzhou-8, Shenzhou-9, and Shenzhou-10 and completed all assigned missions, making important contributions to China's manned space exploration activities," said a memo that China submitted in May 2017 to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.

Tiangong was visited by two crews of taikonauts (Chinese astronauts). The first was a three-person crew in June 2012 that included the first Chinese woman in space; the second was another three-person crew in June 2013.

No visitors arrived at Tiangong-1 after that second crew, but the station was still used to gather data and observe Earth's surface, monitoring ocean and forest use, according to Space.com.

In September of 2016, China launched Tiangong-2, a second space station, which was first visited by a crew the next month. Earlier that year (in March), China had lost contact with Tiangong-1.

Since then, the space station's orbit has slowly decayed. As its altitude has decreased, gravity has caused its falling speed to increase. Now we're all just waiting for the fireball and to see where the debris lands.
