30 million cancer patients prone to death by 2030

Libya Slave Trade: We were used to test weapons, called black monkeys – returnee

We were used to test weapons - Libyan returnee

Akoluche was quoted as saying Libyans killed people the way they liked and that when they bought new guns, they used human beings to test the guns.

28-year-old Lucky Akoluche from Ikah North-East Local Government Area of Delta State, have claimed that Libyan traffickers used migrants to test the efficacy of their firearms.

In a report by Punch, Akoluche, a recently returned forced slavery returnee from Libya, narrated his ordeal to Southern City News.

Akoluche was quoted as saying “The Libyans killed people the way they liked. When they bought new guns, they used human beings to test the guns. They call us black monkeys.”

Reasons for departing Nigeria

I left Nigeria for Europe on April 25, 2016. I wanted to go to Germany, but I had to go through Libya. I left Nigeria because of the suffering that my family and I were facing.

“I was in the second semester of my first year in Ozoro Polytechnic. But I could not continue because of lack of money to pay my fees,” Akoluche explained.

Continuing, Akoluche said: "So, my sister assisted me with some money, which I used to travel. My friends also advised me to go. I spent about N2m."

Regrets and The Libyan experience

Akoluche obviously has sad memories of his trip and has quite a number of regrets.

He said: “I regret abandoning my studies for a trip abroad. Libya is not good; I did not know that it was like that. I should have searched for something to do here in Nigeria.

“It is better to stay in Nigeria because many people are dying in Libya. There was no water and food for days.

“People die at sea. About 10 persons died in my presence due to lack of water and food for up to a month. Some decomposing bodies were seen in the desert as we were travelling.

“I thank the government for bringing me back. But I appeal to the government to help me with my treatment. I am also willing to work,” he reeled out.

The report also revealed that the returnee was repatriated with an injury in his right hand, which he said he sustained during a fight with a Gambian migrant.

The Federal Government has identified 5,000 more Nigerians trapped in Libyan detention camps.

Charge d’Affaires of Nigeria in Libya, Mr Illiya Fachano, said:“there is a camp with 5000 Nigerians and we need the diplomatic police to escort us to extract them."

Tech: New Zealand’s ‘good character’ rules could cost Matt Lauer the $9-million lakefront ranch he bought there

wanaka new zealand

Sexual misconduct allegations against Matt Lauer have caused New Zealand to look into whether the former TV host is fit to own property in the country.

  • New Zealand is seeking further information on sexual misconduct allegations against Matt Lauer to decide if he is still fit to own property in the country.
  • The country requires foreigners who purchase land in New Zealand to be "of good character."
  • Lauer purchased a 16,000-acre ranch worth $9.1 million on New Zealand's South Island earlier this year.
  • Last month, NBC fired Lauer after a colleague accused the TV anchor of sexual misconduct.

New Zealand is seeking further information on Matt Lauer's sexual misconduct allegations to determine if the former TV host is still fit to own property in New Zealand.

Matt and his wife Annette, through Orange Lakes Ltd, purchased a 16,000-acre cattle and sheep farm near Lake Wanaka on New Zealand's South Island earlier this year. But New Zealand’s Overseas Investment Office, which regulates foreign investment in New Zealand, stipulates foreigners who seek to purchase land in New Zealand must be "of good character."

A spokesperson for the agency, Lisa Barrett, told Business Insider it is "aware that allegations have been made in relation to Matt Lauer."

"We are discussing this with his representative and are seeking further information," said Barrett. "A condition of the consent granted to Orange Lakes Ltd to purchase the lease for Hunter Valley Station is that the individuals with control of that company must continue to be of good character."

Valley Station has 30 kilometers of lakefront access, a five-bedroom homestead, stables, 10 huts and four airstrips. According to the New Zealand Herald, the property is worth $9.1 million.

Last month, NBC fired Lauer after a colleague accused the TV anchor of sexual misconduct. Lauer had been a TV personality on the network for over two decades before his fall from grace.

Lauer released a public statement on the allegations, saying: "Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed."

According to the Overseas Investment Office, when determining an investor's good character, the office takes into account any ongoing allegations or investigations into any criminal offenses.

Barrett said the Overseas Investment Office can "seek orders, through the Courts, that require people to dispose of property," if they are deemed to lack good character.

The New Zealand government has been cracking down on foreign investors buying property in the country in order to tackle the nation's housing crisis. In October, New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinta Ardern introduced legislation to ban foreign buyers from purchasing existing homes.

According to the Guardian, the country has become a hotspot for wealthy Americans, who see the country as a safe investment away from the politically unstable climate of the rest of the world.

Australia set to partner with Nigeria’s mining industry

Australia says it is interested in enhancing its partnership with Nigeria in the area of mining.

Mining in Australia is a significant primary industry and contributor to its economy with the country reportedly among the top five mining nations globally.

Australian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Paul Lehmann, told newsmen in Abuja on Sunday that Australia was willing to harness Nigeria’s mineral potentials and expand relations between both countries.

Lehmann said there were “enormous opportunities in Nigeria’s mining sector with some of the world’s highest-grade mineral deposits found in the country.

““For us, it is not all about gaining expertise, or the experience but also the willingness to engage with countries that are invigorating their mineral sector.

““For our Australian mining companies, Nigeria should be seen as a land of opportunity.

““Certainly, there are challenges in Nigeria, but it is so for any mining company when it comes to infrastructure, and other elements of doing business.

““What we want to do is to work together with the Nigerian government to make the connections between the expertise, the experience, the know-how and the equipment, and the investment fund in some cases,” Lehmann said.

The envoy said that there were Australian mining companies already active in Nigeria who sought other ways to develop the mining sector.

““That is an ongoing story, we are hoping that in months and years announcements will be made of production and development of those deposits,” he said.

He also said that trade relations between both countries were “patchy and often dominated by the Nigerian side by its export of crude oil.

He added that Australia’s main exports to Nigeria were wheat products and both countries had shared interests to enhance relations in other areas to move beyond “bulk commodities.

““We are looking at how to increase trade and services and other manufactured products; food and beverages and to bring the trade relations up-to-date and forward.”

In the areas of education, Lehmann said that there were 2000 Nigerian students currently studying in different institutions in Australia.

“”A few years ago, it was about a few 100 Nigerian students studying in Australia. When you think about the potential for that number to increase further that is a great course for excitement and opportunity.”

The envoy further expressed his government’s commitment to providing scholarships for Nigerians to study for Masters Degrees and in short courses to develop their expertise in areas of priority to the country.

“”In addition to a growing number of fee paying students in Nigeria, we continue to offer our Australia Award Scholarships.

““In fact, only a couple of weeks ago, we said farewell to the latest 22 cohorts Nigerians leaving to study in Australia.

“”They will apply their acquired expertise to solve development challenges in Nigeria, as well as to apply what they have learnt to the Nigerian experience.”

Chidinma Ekile: Artist, Actor, Philanthropist

The Nigerian music industry felt a significant impact when Chidinma Ekile shot to stardom after winning the third season of Project Fame West Africa in 2010. The petite singer, known for her strong, unique voice, later released Emi Ni Baller and became the first female musician to peak at number one on the MTV Base Official Naija Top 10 Chart.

The singer, recognised for her hit songs Kedike, Jankoliko, Carry You Go and Run Dia Mouth from her self-titled debut studio album, went on to win the Kora Award for the Best Female West African Act in 2012.

But Chidinma is much more than a musician. Besides her utter love for singing, there is so much more we do not know about this songbird and her journey towards becoming a force to be reckoned with on a global scale.

Life in the limelight

Chidinma talked about her family with a lot of passion. She started singing in the church choir and never dreamed that she could be on such a platform as Project Fame. So, when she found herself in the competition, she didn’t believe that she would win. But she did and became an instant celebrity. Regardless of that, she remained her true self.

To her, she has “the coolest family” and it felt like nothing had changed in her personal life since her Project Fame adventure. She said,

“We’re a very intimate family. Everything that happens to anyone is known to everyone. It’s still like that; I still relate with my siblings the same way I’ve always related with them. Sometimes it can be annoying when they don’t even see me as Chidinma, you know, and I have to remind them like ‘Come you people, is it not the same person you used to know.’ My sister will still be like ‘My friend what’s wrong with you? Go and bring that thing jor.’ Everything is still the same way it’s always been.”

She spoke passionately about her late father who she credited with teaching her a few things that helped her in the industry.

“No one can intimidate me. Absolutely no one. My father was an extremely strict man and some people would ask me sometimes if he was in the military. He taught us not to let anyone intimidate us. He was the only one that could intimidate me, only my father. He passed and then no one else.”

Chidinma loves to sing and would sing anything, regardless of the genre. Project Fame, for her, was a big experience. She had to learn a lot of things very fast and experience things on her own because, before the competition, she had never done anything like that.

Transitioning into the entertainment industry has not changed very much. She doesn’t see the issues she faces in the industry as challenges because she loves to live her life the way she wants to. She is working on a new album, although she refused to disclose the release date.

Artist to actor

She recently starred in her first movie, The Bridge, which was released in cinemas nationwide on Friday the 9th of December, alongside Nigerian actor Demola Adedoyin. Produced by Lasun Ray and directed by Kunle Afolayan, the BoI-powered film tells the story of Stella (Chidinma Ekile), a young lady from a distinguished Igbo family, who falls in love with and secretly marries a Yoruba prince named Obadare (Demola Adedoyin) against her parent’s wish. The relationship becomes threatened by tribal prejudice and the consequences shake the very foundation and unity of both families.

Although she had always wanted to act, she didn’t expect it to come as quickly as it did. She said, “I just got a call from Kunle Afolayan. He didn’t know before then that I wanted to act. I even asked him, ‘Why did you call me? I don’t understand.’ He said, ‘You’re a musician; you shoot music videos,’ and from the way he saw me on screen, he thought that I would at least know a few things and if I had any challenges, he would definitely put me through. I got on set and it was one of the best things I’d ever done. I definitely loved the experience.” She hopes to feature in other movies.

When asked if she could relate directly to the movie, she said, “My father had issues with us marrying from any other tribe so I could relate. I also think that made it a little easy for me.” But now, she says her family has to give her good reasons why she can’t marry someone of her choosing. “If I agree with my family, the guy has to go,” she says. “But if not, I’ll give them my own reasons and tell them why their reasons don’t work.”

To her, a relationship is all about “understanding and friendship,” adding that “those two things are very key and that’s my understanding or idea of a relationship because once those things are there, every other thing will fall into place.”

Rumour has it

Although currently not in a relationship, Chidinma has been rumoured to be involved with people she has worked closely with. That includes Flavour and Demola Adedoyin. When asked if she had a relationship with Demola, she said,

“Hmmm… Demola. My Obadare. He was the Obadare in the movie, so I think I’m used to calling him Obadare. We’re just friends. That’s my first time meeting him ever. I met him on set. I remember when I put up ‘My King’ on my Insta story, I think that was where it came from.”

Dating someone in the entertainment industry is not her card.

“The madness would just be too much. We can’t just both be in people’s faces. It’s impossible. Everybody is prying into our lives.”

While rumours of her dating Flavour and Adedoyin didn’t do much to shake her, the unfounded stories that she had a leaked sex tape were bitter a pill to swallow.

Femini-what?

Chidinma does not want to wear the feminist tag. Asked why, she said,

“People take feminism too seriously. I don’t understand. I think that they just miss the whole thing. A lot of women have used that in the wrong way. Women have taken it to another level. They’ve even forgotten the whole meaning. If it’s about women going to school, fighting for the girl child and all those stuff, then that’s okay.”

Because she is aversed to being tagged a feminist does not mean she is disposed to women being sexually harassed. Sexual harassment is “a very terrible thing”.

She says,

“It’s heartbreaking to hear stuff like that and to hear that it happens in our industry. People have become very desperate and would want to go to any lengths to get what they want and sometimes that is when stuff like this happens, not every time. I think people should just be patient. Wait for your time. Love what you do and avoid shortcuts. Work hard. Don’t let anybody tell you if you don’t do this it will…. No! It’s a lie. Just be patient. That’s it.”

Blinding legacy

One very interesting thing about Chidinma is the fact that she was born blind. She has, however, used that experience to help visually-impaired children and young people across Africa through her NMA Foundation, formed from the last three letters of her name.

“I was born blind. I just couldn’t see for some months. Since I sang about it, I felt the need to help kids that find themselves in such situations or even worse. So every time I travel to these places, I try to extend a hand of love to these children.”

“For some years now—I think like two years or thereabout—I’ve been using my foundation to do quite a lot of things. I’ve been able to take it to some places in Africa. The last time, I think I was in Togo and I was able to do a few things with the SOS village, I hope to do more of that.”

The fame and accolades notwithstanding, Chidinma would love to be seen more as someone who does a lot for visually-impaired kids and young people who have challenges with their education.

Oyo State to generate 2000MW through IPP

oyoTHE Oyo State Government has announced that all necessary arrangements are being put in place to generate more electricity through the Independent Power Project (IPP), confirming that it has sought the approval of the National Energy Regulation Commission (NERC), to generate 2000Mw embedded power.

The Commissioner for Works and Transport, Mr Wasiu Dauda made the disclosure during a meeting with the Management of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), at IBEDC office headquarters in Ibadan at the weekend.

Mr Dauda stated that the state government is poised to proffer a lasting solution to the challenge of power generation shortfall in the state in order to improve the social and economic growth of individuals, corporate organisations, the state and the country at large.

The Commissioner explained that the analysis of the energy needs of the state revealed that Oyo State requires about 1265MW, adding that the State Government has requested for the approval of the National Energy Regulation Commission (NERC), to generate 2000MW embedded power.

He stated that the State Government is already having fruitful discussions with Messrs Diversified Global Eco- Energy (DGE), and efforts are in top gear to kick-start the project using Ibadan North and South West Local Government as a pilot scheme with a total of 100MW.

According to him, Ibadan North Local Government is chosen to represent the residential client template of the scheme while Ibadan South West Local Government represents the industrial client template, pointing that a total of 50MW is intended to be provided for each of the Local Government Area chosen as a pilot scheme.

“DGE has agreed to finance the cost of the equipment, however, the company requires a sovereign guarantee of the state government. To consummate the actualization of this noble project, a special Project Entity (SPE), consisting of DGE, Oyo State Government and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), will have to be formed,” he said.

Mr Dauda noted that the intention of the State Government is to provide 24 hours day long uninterrupted electricity at a relatively cheaper cost both for the individual households and industrial purposes and thereby reduce a colossal sum being spent to generate power by the citizenry.

In his response, the Managing Director/CEO Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), Mr John Donnachie, assured that IBEDC will work with Oyo State Government to ensure the success of the project.

”I am so happy to reaffirm the support of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), because it’s what we have been looking forward to and we pledge our full support and commitment to creating a viable electricity industry that works for the citizenry,” he said.

Private Medical Doctors Sues FCT Over Radio, Television, Other Taxes

BY DOYIN OJOSIPE, Abuja

Private Medical Doctors in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, have registered their displeasure over what they termed as obnoxious taxes placed on their hospitals by the government.

This is as the doctors are being charged about 20 different taxes, including, Television, Radio, environmental, monitoring and trade and operating taxes among others.

The doctors had also approached an FCT High Court for judicial review of taxes and levies paid by members to Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

In a press release made available to journalists, the doctors noted that the gesture is not in the interest of many Nigerians who seek medical care at private hospitals.

The Chairman, Guild of Medical Directors, Dr Chido Nwana had also revealed that while hospitals pay taxes to the tune of N500, 000 to N3 million, many get crippled and could not even afford the purchase of hospital equipment for specific treatment of ailments.

According to him, “Different agencies of government within the FCT have descended on private hospitals in the FCT with duplicitous multitude of crippling taxes. The government through its agencies is making life difficult for health care practitioners and will ultimately force many to close.

“This will have a devastating effect on health care delivery in the FCT as private hospitals currently treat up to 70% of patients requiring health care.”
They also pointed out that while private hospitals operate within very small margins, consumption of their revenues by government agencies through multi0le tax will affect standard of healthcare delivery including survival.

“The danger of this to the community is that it will not only further deplete the medical workforce but also diminish quality access to health care services. It is pertinent to emphasize the distinction between a purely commercial entity and the fact that private health facilities render an essential social service,” they added.

Meanwhile, the Guild of Medical Doctors have disclosed that it will not hesitate to go further in seeking justice for doctors and Nigerians as far as health was concerned.

Odun Nlo Sopin: The story of the CAC Good Women Choir and the evergreen song

Odun Nlo Sopin

In 1979, the CAC Good Women Choir released one of the greatest evergreen songs in Nigerian history.

I'm pretty sure you must have heard the song. This is the period when the song comes alive.

"Odun lo sopin o (This year is coming to an end)

Baba rere (Good God)

Baba Ma somi o (Oh Lord guide us)

Tomotomo (And our children)

Ohun ti o pa mi lekun o (Sorrow and sadness)

Lodun titun (In the new year)

Ma je ko sele simi o Baba rere (Will not be our portion good God)"

You will hear this song in any music shop in the South-Western region in Nigeria this moment. The year is synonymous with the end of the year.

The song is titled 'Odun Nlo Sopin' and it was sung by the CAC Good Women Choir. This is the breathtaking part. The song was released in 1979,  38 years ago. 'Odun Nlo Sopin' is in every right a classic and an evergreen tune many Yoruba Christians use to spiritually prepare themselves for the New Year.

The CAC Good Women Choir was formed in 1975 at the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), in Ibadan. With 200 female members, the choir was formed. The choir released its first album 'Hallelujah' in 1977 under Ibukun Orisun Iye Records.

By 1979 the music group struck gold with the release of 'Odun Nlo Sopin' as the song has survived music trends and decades to still remain relevant.

Led by Mrs Deborah Fasoyin, the group shrunk to 35 members after the creation of states and it now has 12 members presently because of death and other reasons.

In 2012, the group released the classic song on iTunes. This move led to the revival of the song online.

In January 2017, Mrs Fasoyin revealed who sang the song. "It is actually a CAC composition which dates back to the early 1940s. It was a hymn that was sung at the end of each year by all CAC churches but we added only two verses to the original composition so one can’t really say who wrote it but many have said that we made it famous and we thank God for that" she told Punch.

In Japan: Nobel-winning Hiroshima survivor laments nuclear 'insanity'

Setsuko Thurlow was 13 when she survived the atomic bombing of the Japanese city of Hiroshima in 1945

Setsuko Thurlow, 85, was 13 years old when she was rescued from the ruins of the world's first atomic bombing in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.

Setsuko Thurlow, 85, was 13 years old when she was rescued from the ruins of the world's first atomic bombing in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.

On Sunday she receives the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, along with its head Beatrice Fihn.

Here is how Thurlow recalled the horrors of that day 72 years ago, in her speech during the ceremony in Oslo:

Blinding flash

"I still vividly remember that morning. At 8:15, I saw a blinding bluish-white flash from the window.

"I remember having the sensation of floating in the air.

"As I regained consciousness in the silence and darkness, I found myself pinned by the collapsed building. I began to hear my classmates' faint cries: 'Mother, help me. God, help me.'

"Then, suddenly, I felt hands touching my left shoulder, and heard a man saying: 'Don't give up! Keep pushing! I am trying to free you. See the light coming through that opening? Crawl towards it as quickly as you can.'

Burned alive

"As I crawled out, the ruins were on fire. Most of my classmates in that building were burned to death alive. I saw all around me utter, unimaginable devastation.

"Processions of ghostly figures shuffled by. Grotesquely wounded people, they were bleeding, burnt, blackened and swollen. Parts of their bodies were missing.

"Flesh and skin hung from their bones. Some with their eyeballs hanging in their hands. Some with their bellies burst open, their intestines hanging out. The foul stench of burnt human flesh filled the air.

Radiation poisoning

"Thus, with one bomb my beloved city was obliterated. Most of its residents were civilians who were incinerated, vaporised, carbonised –- among them, members of my own family and 351 of my schoolmates.

"In the weeks, months and years that followed, many thousands more would die, often in random and mysterious ways, from the delayed effects of radiation. Still to this day, radiation is killing survivors.

"Whenever I remember Hiroshima, the first image that comes to mind is of my four-year-old nephew, Eiji -– his little body transformed into an unrecognisable melted chunk of flesh. He kept begging for water in a faint voice until his death released him from agony.

"To me, he came to represent all the innocent children of the world, threatened as they are at this very moment by nuclear weapons. Every second of every day, nuclear weapons endanger everyone we love and everything we hold dear. We must not tolerate this insanity any longer."

I have no regret contesting for Anambra gov ―Yul Edochie

THE gubernatorial candidate of the Democratic Peoples’ Congress (DPC), in the just concluded November 18 governorship election in Anambra State, Mr Yul Edochie has said he has no regret contesting for the election that saw Governor Willie Obiano emerged winner of the election, saying that the governor humiliated all other candidates including himself by winning in the 21 local government areas of Anambra State, a feat, he said, is unprecedented.

Edochie, who was speaking at Awka, during the inauguration of the newly elected Coordinator of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Zone B, Comrade Kenneth Okeke and other executive members said he did not lose the election but contested to give Nigerian youths a voice.

Gov Willie Obiano dealt with all of us because I know that it is not easy for a candidate to win the 21 local government Areas in a state like Anambra, so, we congratulate him and now that the election is over, what remains is for us to support him and his government.

“We did not lose the election per se but I am fulfilled that we represented the voice of the youths in Anambra State. We won the election by getting to the end of the election without surrendering to anybody against all odds and pressure. I am calling on all of us to support the winner to ensure that the next four years will be better for the entire Anambra people.”

He, however, charged the new leadership of NANS zone B which comprised of all the tertiary institutions in the South East and South zone to do everything possible to fight cultism in schools as such act is an evil wind that blows no good.

While inaugurating the new executives of NANS led by Comrade Kenneth in the zone, the Special Assistant to Governor Willie Obiano on political matters, Comrade Chinedu Obidigwe commended the new leaders for their emergence at the Bayelsa congress but urged them to ensure that every tertiary institution in the zone is carried along.

Obidigwe who was represented by Barr Chika Nzelu assured the students of Governor Willie Obiano’s support to their course while calling on them to be good citizens by shunning any act of violence that could jeopardize their future.

On his part, Governor’s Special Assistant on Students Matters, Comrade Sheriff Emeka Eboh urged the new leaders not to disappoint Nigerian students but lift the zone higher than they met it.

He told the students that Governor Obiano has to give a nod to immediate commencement of the NANS zone B unity cup competition while hinting at Governor Obiano’s determination to partner Nigerian students achieve their goals.

In his acceptance speech, the new Coordinator, Comrade Kenneth Okeke reinstated his commitment to wiping out cultism in tertiary institutions within the zone, insisting that it will no longer be business as usual.

“We will also take fight against prostitution, robbery and other anti-social vices on campuses in the zone to ensure that we use the association to sanitise our tertiary institutions” he pledged.

PDP Convention: Corruption is in party's DNA – APC

Dokpesi faults electoral process at PDP national convention

Some of the contenders in the PDP Chairmanship race, including Dokpesi, had described the electoral process that produced Uche Secondus as Chairman, as fraudulent.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a "deeply" corrupted organization.

The ruling party stated this in reaction to the just concluded PDP convention.

A statement issued on Sunday, December 10, 2017, by the APC spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, said "the biggest political party in Africa has now been reduced to a regional party".

"In reacting to revelations of how money-for-votes and systematic rigging was brazenly perpetuated during the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC) is mindful of the popular axiom: ‘A leopard cannot change its spot’," the statement said.

Some of the contenders in the PDP Chairmanship race, including Chief Raymond Dokpesi, had described the electoral process that produced Uche Secondus as Chairman, as fraudulent.

In its taunting statement, the APC further said, "The abnormalities that trailed the PDP national convention have further exposed the PDP as a party is not ready and willing to change.

"Indeed, the PDP has once again displayed itself to the generality of Nigerians that it is a Party with corruption deeply rooted in its DNA.

"By frustrating south-west chairmanship candidates, it is unfortunate that the PDP has decided to punish the South West for not voting for the Party in 2015.

"We urge members of the PDP that can pass the integrity test to join the APC so that we can together bring about the much-needed change the country deserves."

At the PDP convention which held on Saturday, December 9, at the Eagle Square in Abuja, former president Goodluck Jonathan and ex-vice-president Atiku Abubakar had rubbished the President Muhammadu Buhari government, saying the APC is a total failure.

Strategy: These are the $800 knives that celebrity chefs like Mario Batali swear by

null

Chelsea Miller started making custom knives in 2011 and has grown her client list to include some of the best chefs in the world.

Chelsea Miller started making custom knives in 2011 and has grown her client list to include some of the top chefs in the world. Business Insider visited her Brooklyn studio to learn how she does it. Following is a transcript of video.

Chelsea Miller: I'm Chelsea Miller and I make knives.

Some of the world's best chefs use her knives.

Chelsea Miller: The chefs at Eleven Madison, Mario Batali, Massimo Bottura. Chefs who make some really, really delicious food. Let's say that.

And they don't come cheap.

Chelsea Miller: My smaller knives start at $200, the largest knife, the chef knife are $800.

I moved to New York when I was 18 and I was singing, dancing, acting, and as much as I love that kind of storytelling, I grew up in Vermont on a farm, homeschooled, my father was a blacksmith, and I was really missing that quality of working with your hands and that creative process.

So I went home for a while at the end of 2011 and started playing around in my father's shop. These knives came out of that exploration.

My friends encouraged me to take out a booth at the Brooklyn Flea and the Brooklyn Flea is an incredible place to be as a creator because there's an incredible amount of foot traffic and a lot of high profile writers, photographers, chefs. And that's how I got my first publications in Saveur Magazine and The New York Times and it really blew up from there.

Most of all my knives have a grater on the side, which is very unique because I've never seen a knife with a grater, but also that is the original function of the original material that I make it from. They're made from horseshoe rasps which have that rasp on the side that was originally used for filing horse's hooves. So in my mind, I thought, "Why take that away?" We can incorporate that into this new tool.

Since I've started my own business, I've noticed a real progressive movement towards more and more and more handmade things and a lot more consciousness about where you items are coming from. Trying to buy things that are going to last you your lifetime instead of something that's meant to be thrown away the second you open it.

I leave a window of about three to six months. If I were making one knife at a time, that would take me a couple of days, but because I have so many I tend to make them in batches, so as many as I can, I start from the beginning process, maybe 10 knives at the same time. So for a few weeks I'll be working on those first initial processes on those knives altogether. Then I'll move on to the next stage.

I use the forge for all of my smaller knives and essentially what we're doing is we're heating the metal and then using the hammer to hammer out the metal, lengthen the metal, to give us a longer, smoother material. And I don't do that with the chef's knives because I want to leave that grater on the side of the knife.

So with the larger chef's knives, I've already cut out the pieces in Vermont with an oxy acetylene torch and then once I get them here, I start the stock removal process. So I start with my bench grinder, grinding away the excess metal on one side to leave the grater on the other.

And then I'll move to my belt sander, and using a series of belts that go from very coarse to very fine, I'll bring that blade down to a fine edge and make it all shiny and smooth and sharp.

Each piece, depending on the way that it looks, it calls for a different piece of wood. So I'll shuffle through a lot of wood to find the right wood for the right knife.

And we'll cut out the wood, we will sand the handle a little bit, then we'll drill the holes, glue it together, clamp it, and then wait for it to cure. I usually let it cure for about 24 hours.

Then we'll take that off, sand the handle down, all the excess glue off the edges. And then we'll put a final sharpen on the blade, oil up the handle, and it's ready to go off and cut some vegetables.

We’ll resist plot to destabilize university education – Striking workers

By Marie-Therese Nanlong.

Jos – The Joint Action Committee, JAC of the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT; Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU have said its members are not scared of the threat by the federal government to implement the ‘no work, no pay’ policy but would resist the veiled plot to fractionalize the University and cause disaffection within the system.

The Associations stressed that the renewed strike action over the non-implementation of memorandum of terms of settlement as signed with the Federal government last September was indefinite despite the threat and called on President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate the plot and punished those trying to cause industrial disharmony.

Addressing journalists in Jos during the Unions rally at the Permanent site of the University of Jos, the SSANU Vice President, (North), Comrade Solomon Alfa said the rally among other reasons was to protest the federal government’s skewed payment of University earned allowance which has been paid to the Academic Staff Union of University, ASUU.

He said, “It would be recalled that the Joint Action Committee, JAC of NAAT, NASU and SSANU embarked on a strike on 11th September, 2017 over the refusal of the federal government to implement the 2009 Agreement its signed with the Unions.

“A conciliatory meeting was convened by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige on behalf of the federal government where a memorandum of terms of settlement was signed. Two months after the MOU, the situation remains the same.

“Government has decided to orchestrate an evil plot to fractionalize the University, cause disharmony and disaffection within the system thereby destroying the emerging industrial peace and we implore President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate the skewed allocation and punish those responsible.”

The Unions further frowned at “the non-release of call circular in compliance of the National Industrial Court judgment on staff schools, shortfalls in salary payments, poor funding of education as against the UNESCO recommendation, inadequate infrastructure and abandoned projects, non-implementation of CONTISS 14 for Technologists and corruption in the Nigerian University system.”

They maintained, “There is no going back until our issues are addressed, we are not moved by ‘no work, no pay’, government should go back to the ILO Convention and take note of the rights of workers to ‘no pay, no work’.”
