Sports: NFL WEEK 12: Our official predictions for who wins this weekend

null

Some of the biggest lines of the year highlight Week 12 of NFL action for bettors.

Happy Thanksgiving!

The year's best food-and-football centric holiday also brings a great slate of games to bet on this week.

Personally, I am thankful for our picks last week, which went a tidy 8-5-1 against the spread to get us back on the right side of winning. I'm also thankful for home underdogs, double-digit lines, and the Philadelphia Eagles.

This week is an interesting one for gamblers, with three of the highest lines of the year on the board, so let's get straight to the bets so we can make some money while we lounge around in a tryptophan haze on Thursday.

All lines courtesy of the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook.

LAST WEEK: 8-5-1
OVERALL: 81-73-6

Minnesota Vikings (-3) at Detroit Lions (Thursday, 12:30 p.m. ET)

The pick: Lions +3

The logic: This is a trap game for the Vikings if I ever saw one. Coming off a big win against one of the strongest teams in the NFC and traveling on a short week to play Matthew Stafford and a Lions team that plays well on Thanksgiving. Detroit wins this one outright.

Los Angeles Chargers (-1) at Dallas Cowboys (Thursday, 4:30 p.m. ET)

The pick: Cowboys +1

The logic: This game has gone through an absolutely terrifying amount of line movement over the past few days. After opening with the Cowboys as four-point favorites, the line has moved a whole five points to make Dallas a slight underdog. This shift was driven by two things — a poor performance of the Cowboys on Sunday night, and an influx of money on the Chargers.

Scenarios like this leave bettors with a tough choice — you can either follow the money, and lay the point with the Chargers, comfortable in the knowledge that the high-roller bettors thought it to be the right side earlier in the week, or you can take advantage of the five point swing Vegas is now spotting you on short notice.

When this game opened, I was ready to slam the Chargers — they could easily be one of the top teams in the AFC if not for their early season field goal struggles, and the Cowboys have shown absolutely nothing on offense since the loss of Ezekiel Elliott. But with the swing, I'm going to take the five extra points, and hope for the best.

New York Giants (+7.5) at Washington Redskins (Thursday, 8:30 p.m. ET)

The pick: Redskins -7.5

The logic: The Giants won in dramatic, last-second fashion last weekend. The Redskins lost in dramatic, last-second fashion last weekend. Judging by the ebb-and-flow nature of NFL football, we'll play the Redskins this week.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+9.5) at Atlanta Falcons (Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET)

The pick: Buccaneers +9.5

The logic: The Buccaneers have won two straight games, and now all of a sudden are laying almost double digits. The Falcons have looked back to their old selves the past two weeks, but it was against depleted Cowboys and Seahawks teams. This line should be closer to six, and the extra points make Tampa Bay and enticing underdog pick.

Cleveland Browns (+8.5) at Cincinnati Bengals (Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET)

The pick: Browns +8.5

The logic: Gah. The Browns. The scourge of my existence. Every week I believe, and every week they let me down, last week in absolutely gut-wrenching fashion.

But as big underdogs against a division rival that has hardly impressed with their play this season, we're doing it again. It's Thanksgiving, and betting on the Browns is my version of Charlie Brown believing that this is the time he's finally going to kick that football.

Tennessee Titans (-3.5) at Indianapolis Colts (Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET)

The pick: Titans -3.5

The logic: Road favorites are never an easy bet for me, but the Titans are still looking to solidify their spot in the postseason, and got embarrassed last week by the Steelers. This is a good spot for them to right the tailspin against a team they've already beaten by two touchdowns earlier in the year.

Buffalo Bills (+10) at Kansas City Chiefs (Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET)

The pick: Bills +10

The logic: After Nathan Peterman imploded for the Bills, Buffalo has returned the starting quarterback role to Tyrod Taylor, who will be looking to prove they never should have benched him in the first place, and also playing to impress any potential offseason suitors. The Chiefs have lost four of five games and do not look like a team that should be favored by double digits against anyone.

Miami Dolphins (+16) at New England Patriots (Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET)

The pick: Dolphins +16

The logic: Along with my addiction to betting on the Browns, I also have an uncontrollable urge to bet against the Patriots. It has lost me too much money to count over the course of my life.

This stems from the fact that usually their lines break every conventional rule of gambling, as they do again here. This is the highest line of the year, and in the NFL, the rule is you blindly take any three-score underdog.

The Patriots feel like they are unstoppable. They've punted just three times in the past two weeks on their way to winning both games by 25 points each. But like hitting on 16, you back the Dolphins in this spot because historically it's the right play, even if it feels psychotic.

Carolina Panthers (-4.5) at New York Jets (Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET)

The pick: Panthers -4.5

The logic: Panthers are trending up and the Jets are trending down. As much as I love a home dog, this isn't a game to overthink.

Chicago Bears (+13.5) at Philadelphia Eagles (Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET)

The pick: Eagles -13.5

The logic: The nervous Philadelphia fan inside me has made me hesitant to back the Birds once we were dubbed the best team in football. But after drubbing the Cowboys last week despite losing our kicker, beating a forlorn Bears team at home by two touchdowns feels like a safe bet.

81% of the bets are currently on the Eagles, making this a sucker bet to me as a person that does his best to abide by the rules of gambling, but I'm tired of betting against my team when they're rolling.

Also, if the Eagles lose, it will be entirely my fault and I will wholly accept responsibility.

Seattle Seahawks (-6.5) at San Francisco 49ers (Sunday, 4:05 p.m. ET)

The pick: Seahawks -6.5

The logic: After their crushing loss to the Falcons on Monday night, the Seahawks now find themselves in a heated battle for a postseason spot in a crowded NFC. It's a lot of points to lay on the road against a divisional opponent, but this game means so much more to the Seahawks than the Niners. Until we get confirmation that Jimmy Garoppolo is making his San Francisco debut, they're not a team to think twice about betting against.

Denver Broncos (+5) at Oakland Raiders (Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET)

The pick: Raiders -5

The logic: It was recently announced that Paxton Lynch would be taking over starting quarterback duties for the Broncos, and I can think of better places to make your NFL debut than the hostile haunts of Raider Nation. Both teams are falling apart, but I trust the Raiders more to put the pieces back together.

New Orleans Saints (+2.5) at Los Angeles Rams (Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET)

The pick: Rams -2.5

The logic: With the Saints coming off a dramatic comeback and the Rams coming home after their first embarrassing loss of the season, this seems like a solid play to counter public perception. That said, if you've been waiting for the Rams to fall back down to Earth, this might be the time for you to cash in on your gut feeling.

Jacksonville Jaguars (-4.5) at Arizona Cardinals (Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET)

The pick: Cardinals +4.5

The logic: "Blaine Gabbert revenge game!" is not a sentence I thought I would be excited to write at the start of this season, but here we are.

Green Bay Packers (+14) at Pittsburgh Steelers (Sunday, 8:30 p.m. ET)

The pick: Packers +14

The logic: I know Hundley was really bad last weekend, but this is a few too many points, and with 75% of bets currently on the Steelers, it's a good spot to fade the public.

Houston Texans (+7) at Baltimore Ravens (Monday, 8:30 p.m. ET)

The pick: Ravens -7

The logic: This is a coin toss for my money, probably a stay away for most people. But home team with a solid defense against Tom Savage and needing a win to keep pace with the AFC Wild Card race. That's good enough for me.

LAST WEEK: 8-5-1

Emeka Ojukwu: 'My father would be proud of my decision to join APC'

APC National Chairman, H.E. Chief John Odigie-Oyegun (left) formally receiving Emeka Ojukwu jnr, son of late Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu into the APC at the Party’s National Secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday

Late warlord's son, Emeka Ojukwu, says joining the APC is exactly what his father would have wanted.

Emeka Ojukwu jnr, son of late Biafra warlord, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, has disclosed that his decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) was a carefully thought out one.

Ojukwu says he is pitching tent with Nigeria's governing party because he wants the South East to occupy its rightful place in the scheme of things on a national scale; and take part in the political decision making process of the country.

Ojukwu jnr made his position known during an APC reception organised in his honour by the party’s national leadership led by national chairman, H.E. Chief John Odigie-Oyegun at the party’s secretariat in Abuja.

Odigie-Oyegun was accompanied by the party’s Deputy National Chairman (South), Engr. Segun Oni; National Vice Chairman (South-East), Hon. Emma Eneukwu; National Auditor, Chief (Dr.) George Moghalu and Chief of Staff to the APC National Chairman, Mr. Edwin Ikhinmwin.

Recall that Ojukwu jnr had earlier announced his decision to join the APC during a rally for Tony Nwoye, the APC candidate for the November 18 Anambra governorship election.

According to Ojukwu jnr: “I decided to lead by example. I have been talking about this for a while and I decided it was time to take the step forward.

"It is a challenge. There are some people that will not be happy about that, but you have to be bold, take a step and let people understand where you are coming from and why you are doing what you are doing.

“APC has been seen in our part of the country as the ‘other’ and I believe we are now showing that the APC is a party that can contend equally with any other political party in the South East and do just as well.

"We now know that Igbo people are part of the APC, the APC is part of Igbo and Igbo are valued part of the Nigerian nation. We hit around the 25 per cent mark in terms of votes in the Anambra election which is not bad given where we are coming from. I think in the future, we are going to do a lot better.

“Let me say this about my father: we shouldn’t take our history and our past to be shackles that hold us in one place, rather they should be stepping stones and building blocks to get us moving towards the future. When my father came back from exile, he had the option to join an ethnic-based party but he chose to move to the centre and there was a reason for that.

“You need to be at the table where decisions are being made. If you are not there, you will always get the short end of the stick. You will be marginalised. That is the message I want to help to propagate. This is a much bigger party than the one I came from, so I put myself at your service to help us achieve our dreams. For me, any way that I can help to push this message forward, I am ready.”

Odigie-Oyegun commended Ojukwu jnr for his decision to join the APC.

“I thank you for choosing the APC, a family that is practical in its political orientation. It is significant that you chose the platform of the final rally at Akwa to make your very significant statement.

"I noted particularly the interpretation of your illustrious father’s interpretation of joining the NPN and the significance of being part of the party’s decision making process such that for anybody who seeks to represent a large group, nationality of that nature, it is critical that he seeks to be where decisions that may affect his people are made.

"I hope the lesson went home, it is a lesson we will continue to propagate, particularly in the South East because we hold the region very dear.

“I have no doubt that your appearance there (Akwa) also contributed significantly to the progress we have made in Anambra state and we are looking forward to being able to propagate that to the other South East states as we start approaching the next set of elections".

Odigie-Oyegun said despite losing the recent Anambra governorship election, the party’s performance clearly showed that progress is being made in terms of the party’s appeal and inroads in the South East.

“I consider that we have made a lot of gains in spite of not winning the Anambra state. But it is clear if people interpret properly that the APC given the base from which we were starting, given the kind of intense propaganda that goes out there, that the South East is against the APC – whether it is religion, ethnic or even historical – we have made some progress", Odigie-Oyegun said.

ALSO READ: Ojukwu's son says Biafra agitation is valid but must not be violent

He added that; "But we are not resting on that. We are immediately setting up a team to study the elections, to look at whatever significant issues it has thrown up, to find ways in which we can improve our performance as we spread into the rest of the South East, basically to tell us what we did not do right in Anambra State which we need to correct as the electoral processes begin in the rest of the South East.

"We hope it will throw up valuable lessons that will help us perform much better in subsequent elections in the South East.

“I truly welcome you, there is no question at all that your name is an asset, what you stand for is an asset and we hope that in the next few months, you will be much more closely integrated within the party structure at national level and of course in the South East.

"For people to join us at this time is a clear indication that they understand what is going on and are ready to put their names, reputation, energies, and resources behind our effort to rebuild the country and be part of this process of change. This is a struggle that we must win. The nation cannot afford to lose, because greatness beckons and unless we get our acts right, we are not going to get there,” Oyegun said.

Hazard, Willian shine as Chelsea cruise into last 16

Chelsea's midfielder from Belgium Eden Hazard (R) celebrates after scoring a goal from the penalty spot during the UEFA Champions League Group C football match between Qarabag FK and Chelsea FC in Baku on November 22, 2017. Kirill KUDRYAVTSEV / AFP

Chelsea powered into the Champions League last 16 as Eden Hazard and Willian inspired a 4-0 thrashing of 10-man Qarabag on Wednesday.

Antonio Conte’s side reached the knockout stages with a game to spare thanks to influential displays from Hazard and Willian at the Olympic Stadium that knocked Azerbaijanis Qarabag out of the competition.

Chelsea will go into their last Group C fixture against Atletico Madrid, who take on Roma at the Wanda Metropolitano later on Wednesday, on 10 points and still in with a chance of finishing top.

Hazard scored Chelsea’s first-half opener from the penalty spot after his pass to Willian provoked a foul on the Brazilian from Rashad Sadygov, who was sent off as incredulous Qarabag players questioned both the awarding of the penalty and the red card.

Willian doubled Chelsea’s lead nine minutes before the interval, collecting Hazard’s deft back-heeled pass before rolling home.

Cesc Fabregas netted Chelsea’s third from the spot in the 73rd minute after another foul on Willian, and the Brazil international crashed home his second in the closing moments.

The English champions were heavily criticised after a woeful loss at Roma in their previous Champions League match, but have now won three in a row in all competitions.

Conte had bemoaned the fixture schedule that sends Chelsea to Liverpool for a crucial Premier League game on Saturday, just 48 hours after they return to London from the 5,000 mile (8,000 kilometres) round trip to Azerbaijan.

But he still fielded a strong side, with David Luiz starting in defence for the first time since being dropped after a reported training ground row with the Blues boss following the Roma defeat.

Michel rattles woodwork

Conte’s side had thrashed Qarabag 6-0 in September, but they almost fell behind early on in Baku when Maksim Medvedev was allowed to advance into the area with little resistance.

Michel picked up possession and lashed a fierce shot against a post before the rebound was blazed over.

Hazard was nominally Chelsea’s central striker but the Belgian playmaker had freedom to roam and it was from a deeper position that he triggered his side’s 21st-minute opener.

Threading a pin-point pass behind the Qarabag defence, Hazard sent Willian clear on goal and the Brazil winger tumbled into the area after Sadygov grabbed at his arm.

Referee Manuel de Sousa saw enough contact to give Chelsea the penalty and sent off Sadygov.

Qarabag were furious but Hazard ignored their complaints to stroke home the spot-kick for his sixth goal in his last seven appearances.

He followed the opener with an extravagant touch to help double Chelsea’s lead in the 36th minute.

Pedro started the swaggering move with a flick into the path of Willian, who guided the ball to Hazard.

The Belgian baffled the Qarabag defence with a sublime back-heeled pass into Willian and he made no mistake with a clinical finish.

Conte’s team struck for a third time in the 73rd minute when Gara Garayev conceded a penalty with a tug on Willian.

Fabregas’s initial spot-kick was ruled out for encroachment, but the Spaniard was unflustered as he slotted home again.

Chelsea weren’t done and Willian capped the rout with a stinging strike from the edge of the area in the 85th minute.

“I’m a crisis manager, and a tested hand” | Gbenga Daniel speaks on his aspiration as PDP chairman

The former governor of Ogun, Otunba Gbenga Daniel says he is a crisis manager and the best candidate for the national chairmanship position of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He was in Kogi on Wednesday for a meeting with the party delegates from the state to seek their support.

Daniel said he could lead the PDP to bounce back and  “change the change” at the federal and state levels it had lost, come 2019.

He described the PDP prior to the 2015 elections as crises-ridden and promised to deal decisively with all the crisis that bedevilled the party and robbed it of its prime position in the country.

I’m a crisis manager as I have just told you; and not only that.

I’m a tested hand. I understand what it means to run an election. I have manned a state before and I have managed people.

The bulk of the challenge we have in the party is just people’s management.

For you to be successful, you must have the capacity to manage interlocking interests.

As crisis managers, we must strive very hard to underplay areas of division”, he said.

The former governor said he was presenting himself for the position of the national chairman to rebuild the party.

He promised to entrench the culture of internal democracy, if successful.

Responding, State Chairman of PDP, Sam Ohuotu, commended the former governor and his team for bringing their campaign train to Kogi, assuring him of members’ support.

Berizzo: Argentine coach to continue at Sevilla despite cancer shock

Sevilla's Argentinian coach Eduardo Berizzo, 48, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer

Berizzo, 48, oversaw training on Wednesday following his team fighting back from three goals down at half-time to draw 3-3 with Liverpool.

Spanish football rallied round Sevilla's Argentine coach Eduardo Berizzo on Wednesday after the club confirmed he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer a day after his side staged a dramatic Champions League comeback against Liverpool.

"The medical services of Sevilla FC can inform that the coach of the first team, Eduardo Berizzo, has been diagnosed with an adenocarcinoma of the prostate," Sevilla said in a statement.

Berizzo, 48, oversaw training on Wednesday following his team fighting back from three goals down at half-time to draw 3-3 with Liverpool at the Sanchez Pizjuan stadium on Tuesday night, and Sevilla president Jose Castro insisted he will remain in charge as long as his duties are compatible with his treatment.

"Berizzo is strong and will continue while we wait for treatment," Castro told Sevilla's radio station.

"It is a personal matter and we want to make it clear that he is our coach.

"We will support and rally round him because we are sure his problem will be solved."

A former centre-back for River Plate, Marseille and Celta Vigo among others, Berizzo, nicknamed Toto, is in his first season as Sevilla boss after three successful years in charge of Celta.

The hashtag AguanteToto (staystrongToto) was trending in Spain with clubs, including Real Madrid and Barcelona, and players sending Berizzo messages of support.

"Be strong boss, you are in the best place in the world to not give in because there they never give up," said Sevilla's acclaimed former sporting director Monchi, who joined Serie A club Roma earlier this year.

"Life brings blows that make us remember what really matters. We are all with you Berizzo," said Real Madrid and Spain captain Sergio Ramos, himself a former Sevilla player.

Berizzo made no statement on his health when speaking to media, but news of his cancer diagnosis came just hours after his side's remarkable comeback against Liverpool, with several Sevilla players hailing Berizzo's powers of motivation to orchestrate their second-half revival.

Guido Pizzaro struck in the third minute of injury time to keep alive Sevilla's hopes of topping Group E after Wissam Ben Yedder struck twice early in the second half to claw back three Liverpool goals in the first half an hour from Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

"We had to come out with a different attitude for the fans and for the boss, he made us play like that," said Argentine international Ever Banega.

"He turned the situation around in the second half."

Sevilla sit fifth in La Liga and need just a point from their final Champions League group game away at Maribor to secure their place in the last 16.

Tech: You're probably defrosting your food all wrong — here are 4 ways to do it safely

null

Leaving your food on the counter may attract bacteria.

This video was originally published in October 2016.

We spoke with Robert Gravani, a professor of food science at Cornell University, to figure out the safe and unsafe ways to thaw your food. Leaving it on the counter is a big no-no. Following is a transcript of the video.

You've been defrosting your food all wrong. Don't defrost your food by leaving it on the counter because once it's between 40-140 ºF your food is in the danger zone where bacteria will multiply rapidly.

Here are the 4 safe ways to defrost your food:

1. In the refrigerator is the slowest method, so prep ahead of time. A frozen turkey takes at least 24 hours to thaw per every 5 pounds. Once thawed, poultry and seafood will stay good for 1-2 days. Red meat for 3-5 days. If it's still good after thawing, you can refreeze it.

2. In cold water is the second-slowest method. Make sure it's in a sealed container or bag. Otherwise, bacteria from the environment could contaminate your food. Submerge it in the cold (never hot) tap water. Change the water every 30 minutes until thawed. One pound of meat should take about an hour. A whole turkey will take about 30 minutes per pound. Once thawed, you must cook immediately! (You can refreeze after cooking it.)

3. In the microwave is your next option. Be careful because you can accidentally cook some parts while thawing, so make sure to always cook fully through after thawing in the microwave. (You can refreeze after cooking it.)

4. Simply cook it — that's your quickest method. Skip the thawing process altogether, and expect the cooking process to take about 50% longer than what's recommended.

Tech: You're probably defrosting your food all wrong — here are 4 ways to do it safely

Politics: Rand Paul's wife blasts media for 'gleeful' attack coverage, says he hasn't taken a pain-free breath since

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky. addresses the crowd gathered at his victory celebration, Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016, in Louisville Ky. at right is his wife Kelley Paul.

Kelley Paul, the wife of Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, said that the media has victimized her husband a second time after he was attacked earlier in November.

  • Kelley Paul, the wife of Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, wrote in a CNN op-ed that the media has victimized her husband a second time after he was attacked earlier in November.
  • Rand Paul has suffered six broken ribs and lung damage following the attack allegedly perpetrated by his neighbor.
  • Media outlets have frequently quoted Paul's neighbors regarding a landscaping dispute between Rand Paul and his alleged attacker — a narrative Kelley Paul rejected.

The wife of Sen. Rand Paul lambasted the media on Wednesday for "delighting" in spreading rumors about the attack earlier this month that left the Kentucky Republican with six broken ribs and lung damage.

In a CNN op-ed, Kelley Paul described the incident as a "deliberate, blindside attack" perpetrated by the couple's Bowling Green neighbor, and not a "scuffle," "fight," or "altercation," as some media outlets have portrayed it.

"This has been a terrible experience; made worse by the media's gleeful attempts to blame Rand for it, ridiculing him for everything from mowing his own lawn to composting," Kelley wrote.

"As his wife, I have been distraught over seeing him suffer like this. There have been several nights where I had my hand on my phone ready to call 911 when his breathing became so labored it was terrifying," she said, adding that her husband has not taken a single breath without experiencing pain since the incident occurred on November 3.

She accused media outlets of victimizing her husband "a second time" as her husband recovers from his injuries, as well as "concocting theories about an 'ongoing dispute,' based on nothing more than speculation from an attention-seeking person with no knowledge of anything to do with us."

Kelley appeared to be referring to Jim Skaggs, a man who developed the gated community in which the Pauls and their neighbor live and who did not witness the attack but has opined on the incident to various media outlets.

Skaggs said Rand Paul and the neighbor had a long-running dispute centered around the landscaping on their properties.

"I think it was a neighbor-to-neighbor thing," Skaggs told The New York Times. "They just both had strong opinions, and a little different ones about what property rights mean."

Kelley, however, shot down that assessment on Wednesday. She also said neither she nor her husband has spoken with the alleged attacker in a decade, "other than a casual wave from the car."

"The only 'dispute' existed solely in the attacker's troubled mind, until, on a beautiful autumn day, he ran down the hill on our property and slammed his body into Rand's lower back as he stood facing away, wearing noise-canceling headphones to protect his ears from the lawnmower," Kelley Paul said.

The alleged attacker, 59-year-old retired anesthesiologist Rene Boucher, has been charged with fourth-degree assault. In a bizarre statement released shortly after the extent of Paul's injuries were made public, Boucher's attorney Matthew Baker said the incident had nothing to do with either man's political beliefs.

"It was a very regrettable dispute between two neighbors over a matter that most people would regard as trivial," Baker said. "We sincerely hope that Senator Paul is doing well and that these two gentlemen can get back to being neighbors as quickly as possible."

Boucher has pleaded not guilty to the charge, and is due in court on November 30.

Sports: Jerry Jones backs off threats to sue fellow NFL owners

null

After tensions have risen over Roger Goodell's suspension in recent weeks, it looks like Jerry Jones has been called on his bluff.

  • Jerry Jones has walked back his initial threats to sue the NFL and his fellow owners in a letter sent to Falcons owner Arthur Blank.
  • Jones argued that he just wanted to ensure that owners who were not a part of the NFL's compensation committee had an opportunity to be heard before Roger Goodell's extension as commissioner went forward.
  • Jones also denied again that his attacks on Goodell were in any way related to the suspension of Ezekiel Elliott.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has walked back his threats to sue his fellow NFL owners.

As Ken Belson of the New York Times reports, Jones took a different tone in a letter sent to Arthur Blank, owner of the Atlanta Falcons and chairman of the NFL's compensation committee who has been described as the "point man" on negotiating Goodell's extension.

In the letter, Jones said that his threats of legal action were an effort to ensure that all owners had "a voice in approving the terms" of Goodell's contract extension, rather than those with a vote on the compensation committee. "With the committee now receiving valuable feedback from a number of owners," Jones said, he is "standing down from my threat of litigation against the committee," according to the Times.

Jones has been a vocal advocate against extending Goodell's contract as commissioner, and had initially threatened a lawsuit against both the league and individual owners in an effort to delay the process. But after a back and forth with the league that included threats of a "nuclear option" that might force Jones to sell the Cowboys, Jones is now backing off his initial bluster.

Jones also repeated in the letter that his fight against Goodell had nothing to do with suspension of star Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott.

With the letter, Jones presents football fans first signal that the circus surrounding Goodell's extension might be finally coming to a sane conclusion.

Action against Kashamu coming soon ―PDP

kashamuTHE national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), appears poised to discipline Senator Buruji Kashamu representing Ogun East which it said had caused the party so much pain.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, alleged at a press conference at the national secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday that the Senator had continued to work against the interest of the party.

According to him, Kashamu bankrolled parallel congresses in the party an action which he said led to the party’s loss of Edo and Ondo State governorship election.

He said: “Here, we need to remind PDP members and Nigerians that it was Sen Kashamu and those he was bankrolling that conducted parallel congresses in Edo and Ondo State.

“They did not stop there but took us up to Supreme Court and in the end openly endorsed and campaigned for our opponents. Their actions made us lose the election.”

He recalled that when the NCC lost its case at the Appeal Court against the Senator Ali Modu Sheriff’s leadership to which Kashamu was loyal, the NCC cooperated with Sheriff for the Osun West Senatorial electron which Ademola Adeleke won.

He said: “The public should, however, recall we neither conducted parallel congress in the Osun Senatorial bye-election nor did we campaign for our opponents.

“We rather directed everybody to work for the Party nominee and he won. You can clearly see who has been undermining the Party’s chances at elections.”

The party spokesman pointed out that even when Kashamu was queried by the party over his activities and his matter referred to the PDP Disciplinary Committee, the senator obtained a court order to stop the committee from proceeding with its work.

He warned however that Kashamu was not bigger than the PDP and would not be allowed to continue to sabotage the party indefinitely.

Also speaking on the allegations of bias made by some national chairmanship aspirants in the party, Adeyeye insisted that the party will stick to its zoning formula of North/South.

But he added that where regions are able to agree on micro-zoning, the national leadership will not object.

But where there is no agreement, the issue will be resolved at the national convention through an election.

He said Chief Bode George who accused the NCC of bias was the same person other members of the PDP had accused of being favored in the Lagos State chapter of the party.

He stated: “We at Wadata (PDP national secretariat) only officially recognise what the Convention and NEC have done. That is zoning of positions between the North and the South.

“We, however, recognise that both North and South may politically microzone positions to geopolitical zones and the geopolitical zones to states.

“The North micro-zoned and other zones are micro-zoning without recourse to PDP Headquarters.

“We also understand that the South of recent is doing so but up to now have not been able to reach agreement on Chairmanship and Deputy Chairman. If this is not sorted out before the Convention it means the matter can only be settled at the Convention.

“As Democrats and also to avoid imposition against the wish of the majority, we have opened the race to all aspirants who disagree with the micro-zoning. Therefore sale of forms has been and will continue to be open to all within the context of North/South that NEC took a decision on.”

On membership of committees supervising the congresses in respective states and the FCT which another aspirant had accused the NCC of skewing in favour of a particular aspirant, the party spokesman said the NCC never took nominations from any candidate but from the states and other organs of the party.

He added: “We wish to remind all that it’s the State Chapters that actually conduct congresses. The Committees only compile the results and attend to Appeals after which they file their reports to the Party Headquarters.

“When all reports are filed by the Committees, we shall summon the States Chairmen to come with their copies and reconfirm the results at a date to be fixed and all bonafide interest groups will be welcomed to witness it. This is to reassure everybody that validly elected delegates list is not tampered with.”

On the specific allegations against the NCC, he said: “Commenting specifically on the issues raised by Chief Bode George through his Director-General and ProfTunde Adeniran, we wish to state that Chief Bode George assertions were wild and not specific.

“However, Prof Adeniran’s letter specifically mentioned 5 names out of about 216 names. While assuring him that we shall pay special attention to the places they were posted to, but we did not and could not interview the members to know their linings before calling on them to serve. It’s most likely that some of the remaining 211 members are aligned to some other persons seeking elective offices including himself and Chief Bode George.

“It pains us that on the one hand Chief Bode George who is fully aware of the pains we are still going through in Lagos in order to fairly and equitably carry everybody on board to the extent that we are been accused by others as siding with him is the same person accusing us of impunity.

“On the preparations for the Convention, we have asked Chairmanship aspirants to make input so that they have their eyes and ears on each Committee. It was only Chief Bode George that did not attend the meeting we had with the aspirants.”

On Anambra State election, he explained that PDP was sabotaged by rebel members of the party.

He traced the problem to 2003 when the party became factionalism in the state.

According to him, most of the votes recorded by the eventual winner of the election came from members of the PDP.

He maintained: “We do agree that the Anambra issue is a self-inflicted injury which has been with the State since after the 2003 general elections

“Irrespective of the perfections or imperfections of our Party primaries and the outcome, PDP Anambrarians had developed conflicting mindsets. We did our best to bring all under one Caretaker Committee hoping that things will work out well.
